Virgin Islands Shipping Registry

The Virgin Islands Shipping Registry, also known widely as VISR, is the maritime organization responsible for the registration of ships in the Virgin Islands. Registering your yacht of ship in a particular flag state will determine the rights, obligations and advantages the ship will acquire. Many flag states allow for tax planning and bespoke legislation with regards to the operation of your vessel.

Responsibilities of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry

The Virgin Islands Shipping Registry is responsible for the development, implmentaiton and control of maritime policies of the Government in the Virgin Islands. The rigistries primary aim is to ensure the safety and security at sea will also ensureing the prevention of ship pollution.

In addition to the above, the VISR enforces high standards of training and certification for seafarers in addition to onshore employees and oeprators.

One of the princple aspets of the VISR is its capacity to provide ship registration as as from the 7th June 2007, the UK Minister of Transport declared the VISR a category 1 status. This means the registry can now register a wider variety of vessels including general cargo ships with unlimited tonnage, yachts weighing up to 3000 gross tons and all vessels categorised under the category 2 status.

VISR aims to provide all registered vessel owners with support and freedom of operating their vessels in line with relevant martime laws. Furthermore the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry aims to provide reliable, upt od ate and accurate maritime information on policies and regulations brought ou tby the Virgin Islands Governemnt.

The regulations enforced by the VISR are applicable to vessels registered with the registry who undertake both domestic and international routes.
